Pumpkins!!!

This weekend flew by. It was absolutely glorious but not long enough! Friday i took a walk around Green Lake with my mother, and then got home only to find that not only was our heat out (had been out for 3 days and our land lord didn’t get it fixed until the 4th, which he is legally obligated to fix within 24 hours of notification), but apparently our hot water was out too. Now, I had been able to handle the lack of heat (due to blankets and 3 cats cuddled up next to me as I slept) but I draw the line at no hot water. Plus, Friday night was our first night in the 30’s. I packed up and headed to Matt’s. It’s nice having a boyfriend with livable abode. I left rather early (for him) and wouldn’t let him make me breakfast. Yes friends, he was actually complaining because I wouldn’t let him make me breakfast. I kid you not. He is pretty spectacular. So i left him in bed, and headed home to make this:

Mexican Breakfast!

Mexican Breakfast!

I had some refritos in the freezer, and I used up my last 3 eggs (I am going to get more eggs from the country this week!). Into the Mexican scramble went 1 jalapeño, 2 tomatillos, garlic, and kale from my CSA box. VERY good. I didn’t want to make more salsa with the tomatillos (also from the CSA box) and I didn’t know what to do with them. I figured they wouldn’t hurt the eggs anymore than a tomato, and I was right. Maybe it isn’t traditional, but it was tasty.

After a hearty breakfast I headed to Pike Place Market. I love the market during Autumn, yes honestly it is great in Summer too, and you cannot beat the flowers in the Spring, oh and the Winter does hold it’s own charm…ok i just love the market, but Autumn is by far my favorite season and there were such lovely things for sale! I stocked up on different varieties of garlic (which I plan on roasting and reviewing), hot peppers, hazelnuts, concord grapes, tea, and some flavored oil for coffee and baking.

HUGE Hazelnuts!

HUGE Hazelnuts!

I bought a pint of these for $4. A little spendy but it was special, and I have never bought filberts from a farmer before. They were much bigger than any I have ever seen, and I am thinking about how to use them. perhaps a hazelnut crust tart?

Market Spice is my favorite places in town to buy spices and one of my favorite places to buy teas. I bought a bag of my favorite curry powder, some Orange Cream tea (which is amazing!), and 2 bottles of flavored oils. The flavors are artificial, but I figured that most flavored coffees are artificially flavored, and it isn’t like I drink gallons of the stuff. I got the Hazelnut cream and the almond. Beats the “almond powder” they sell (which I almost bought until I found out it has a sugar base!).

The Original, non-censored sign

The Original, non-censored sign

Most people don’t know this, but the original Starbucks logo has breasts on it and the juncture of the 2 tails. I prefer it personally as I am in no way prudish and appreciate both art and the human form. Apparently though others couldn’t handle the old logo and so it went through an evolution to the censored version we know of today. I personally don’t even like Starbucks coffee, and only drink it when there is no other choice, but it is a Seattle institution, and I do enjoy a little bit of history.Plus I happen to be a huge fan of Mermaids and Sirens in particular. I rather love the old logo.

Bouquet

Bouquet

I love fresh flowers. I see women walking around carrying fresh bouquets and I think to myself, I want to be one of those women! I want to bring home a fresh bouquet for my home, just to brighten my spirits! I never do though, and I wonder why! I think next weekend I just might buy myself a bunch. Just for me. I am also a huge fan of ornamental kale and ornamental cabbage, don’t know why but I think they are so pretty!

These 2 characters caught my eye. The dog immediately drew me in. He seemed to be talking to me and for some reason filled me with immense peace and contentment. He was just so pleased to be sitting there in the sun watching the people walk by, and his musician friend was quite good. I think often people don’t pay any attention to the street performers which is sad to me. I have a great deal of respect for art and artists, and I try to give when I can. Mostly because they are doing what I wish I had the guts to do. I wish I had the courage to try and depend on my art for my income, but I don’t. Instead I work a day job and my art is my hobby. Someday though! Someday.

The musician was also quite good. His lyrics came straight from his heart, and the more I listened the more they really got to me. I hope that he is there next week as I’d love to hear more of his music.

After the market I went over to Healeo for a smoothie and to meet with my friend Hannah. We had a great discussion covering topics ranging from Roman Polanski to female philosophers. I think we might even put together a monthly gathering to discuss philosophy. I cannot even explain my glee over this! I then took a walk through Volunteer park right when the sun was setting. It’s probably my favorite park in the city, and the light was stunning. Also they have a beautiful dahlia garden there, one which I had never seen before…perfect timing as they were all in bloom!

After this lovely day I drove home, showered in the hot water (turns out the handy man had turned off the gas and forgot to turn it back on), and headed over to Matt’s just in time to see the glory that is the Harvest Moon. I only wish my camera had been able to fully capture it.

I’ll write more about my Sunday later, as it was also full of yummy and beauty! Hope you were able to enjoy the first weekend of October!
