Juice_POM

last week I got a glorious package in the mail from Pom Wonderful. Eight beautiful little bottles full of garnet colored pomegranate juice. Being the pom lover I practically did a jig when I saw the box on my porch. I was overjoyed when I was contacted about the gift box a couple of weeks ago, and said that of course I would appreciate a box! I am not one for juice. I don’t like that you strip out all the fiber and end up spiking your blood sugar, however because pomegranate juice is SO good for you I do make one exception. You still won’t find me drinking bottles upon bottles of the delicious, but I definitely do enjoy it. Ideally I would stop at 1/4 C. a day but sometimes I do drink a bit more than that, and I don’t drink it everyday because it can get a tad pricey.

Last night for dessert I made a lovely concoction in my Vita-mix. Matt and I went out for vegan Asian food, and for dessert I wanted to test out some pom juice in something. This goal was easily met with some frozen mangoes from Trader Joe’s and half a bottle of Pom Wonderful pomegranate juice. I used enough of the frozen mango to get a sherbet consistency, and then topped it off with another splash of pom juice. It was SO good, very refreshing, and I have to say MUCH better than store bought mango sorbet. Plus it has the added benefit of the Pom juice. Yum! The photo doesn’t do it justice, just know that it was delicious. I highly recommend using this as a Summer treat.

I am definitely a fan of Pom Wonderful. I don’t have the time to juice my own pomegranates, to I appreciate that they have done this for me. My only complaint is that they no longer use glass bottles and have switched to plastic. I am not a fan of plastic so this is a bit of a problem for me.

I know it isn’t the season for pomegranates, but with pom Wonderful being in stores year round you can use this healthy fruit in recipes no matter the season. Since I have a few bottles in my fridge you will be seeing more pomegranate juice in recipes in the next few weeks.

I was gifted the 100% pomegranate juice, but I am just dying to try the pom-kiwi juice. I haven’t seen it in stores in my area so I will be on the lookout!

  1. I was lucky enough to get to sample the pom kiwi and pom nectarine once…those are both amazing! I actually preferred the taste of mixing them in with water or even some green tea (which I’m really not a fan of but had some laying around). I love this stuff but can’t trust myself to not drink a full 8oz of it. Your sorbet idea is genius! Or homemade popsicles. So great.

  2. These would also be best friends with my Soda Stream! Hope you had a fantastic trip – it looked like it. We’ll have to get together soon – I’m off to AZ for a mini-trip shortly.

  3. Great work, Marissa, and good to “see” you :) hope life is treating you right!

  4. I was lucky enough to get some samples of POM too :) YUM YUM!

  5. Great idea! I love Pom! Thanks for sharing the recipe with us!

  6. I refuse to buy POM Wonderful for these reasons: http://soulveggie.blogs.com/my_weblog/film/ Check out this thorough review of 100% pomegranate juice for ethical options: http://www.thenibble.com/reviews/MAIN/beverages/juices/pomegranate-juice-reviews3.asp I’ve been drinking RW Knudsen for years…with vodka!

  7. I screwed up! Delete the first post!

  8. I can completely understand that. Personally I prefer buying pomegranate juice from Trader Joe’s because it comes in glass bottles. I won’t boycott POM because they have stopped the animal testing, but I don’t go out of my way to buy their products specifically. If they started animal testing again you can bet I’d boycott.

  9. The FDA recently cited POM for various disgressions and unsupportted claims:

  10. Thank you for that information. I don’t think that pomegranate juice is medicinal, nor do I look to Pom Wonderful for scientific evidence of any kind. I like pomegranate juice, know that pomegranates are good for you, and therefore had no problem accepting a gift of the Pom juice. I don’t think that Pom Wonderful has juice that is more nutritious than others, and I probably won’t be purchasing their juice in future I don’t like that the switched from glass bottles to plastic bottles. I personally do not have the time nor the energy to investigate every single company I purchase from to make sure I only buy from companies who share my ethics. I can only do so much and remain slightly sane. I fully support your battle though, and do hope that Pom Wonderful changes it’s ways in regards to environmental issues.
